Source Filmmaker, a new surprise from Valve

Parents of Half-Life series still seem to have big plans about the Source Engine, the engine that I use since the appearance of Half-Life 2. Over the time, Source received a significant number of upgrades, both visually (HDR lighting in Half-Life 2: Lost Coast, for whom technology demo that remembers) and in terms of facilities dedicated developers (such a recent addition is the editor of levels for Portal 2).

Since this second category is part and Source Filmmaker, a tool that allows interested persons to make movies (cinematic sequences) using the resources created for the Source engine (models, textures, levels, etc…). Source Filmmaker allows fine control of the camera and camera angles in a three-dimensional space and changes in real-time animations.

But the icing on the cake is facial animation system accelerated by the GPU, capable of downright spectacular results. You only have to remember that Valve has made all its promotional trailer for Team Fortress 2 on the program, which is now offered to the public, initially in beta, the final version will be launched later this year.

You can apply for entry into the beta test program Filmmaker Source application by visiting the official site and choosing “Sign up for a free invite”. Warning, you will need a valid Steam account and Steam installed client to the following steps. Also, you can find a series of video tutorials dedicated to each step of the process of making a video with the Source Filmmaker. To celebrate the release of Source Filmmaker, Valve has released a new trailer for Team Fortress 2 (of course with the help of Source Filmmaker).
