09. The Swarm
A swarm of bees from Africa terrorize the American state and kill thousands of American people. Entomology Brad Crane (Michael Caine) leads a group of researchers to discover an antidote. As usual, the army (led by Richard Widmark as a major general) would send the perpetrators on the other side. The plot is weak, it is true, and the dialogue is extremely ridiculous. Perhaps that Caine and Widmark, Katherine Ross, Olivia de Havilland, Henry Fonda and Richard Chamberlain feel quite humiliated for having played such a movie.
08. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Inspired by Joules Verne’s novel, written in 1886, this version is known to many adaptations. James Mason plays the Captain Nemo, commander of the submarine Nautilus. Nemo with his crew of whale hunter accompanied by Ned Land (Kirk Douglas), by Professor Arronax (Paul Lukas) and the Conseil (Peter Lorre). An exercise performed with a nuclear bomb in the desert of New Mexico is devastating because the ants suffer genetic mutations and converted into some giant insects that feed on human flesh. Again, the U.S. Army is required to save humanity and stop breeding ants. The movie sends a message about the dangers of an atomic explosion on the world but at the same time, it is a movie with monsters. He was nominated for an Oscar for special effects.
06. Lake Placid
A crocodile of about nine meters is found in the lake from Maine, being able to tear a man in two. The investigation team is part and keeper of wild animals (Bill Pullman), flirting with the paleontologist Bridget Fonda. The movie stirs both laughter and thrills, there are comic scenes performed by Brendan Gleeson, who plays the role of the cynical sheriff, Oliver Platt is an eccentric expert on crocodiles. However, a remarkable performance proves Betty White in the role of Dolores, a vulgar woman who lives near the lake and dealing with crocodile as a pet, feeding it to cows in his herd.
05. Arachnophobia
This is another story about normal things which are beyond the control when a killer spider from South America on a ship goes to America. Mates with a local spider and the offspring bite thousands of people from a small town in California. The physicist Ross Jennings (Jeff Daniels) with Delbert McClintock (John Goodman) will initiate an investigation. Dr. Jennings is terrified of spiders and discovers that there is a nest in his barn.
04. Cujo
A bat suffering from rabies bite a friendly St. Bernard dog named Cujo, so that it becomes violent and starts to make victims in a small town from America. The movie, adapted from the novel by Stephen King is famous for the originality of terrifying scenes. This story is closer to reality than the other mutants’ giants.
03. The Birds
Nobody creates the suspense like Hitchcock and this is really threatening. Adapted from a short story writen by Daphne du Maurier, the movie presents the successive attacks of birds on a small town in the San Francisco Bay, which degenerates into violence after the birds try to dominate. In the movie plays Tippi Hedren (one of Hitchcock’s tempting blondes) and Rod Taylor. There is a very frightening scene in which a flock of crows gather in silence in the school yard, ready to attack. The film received an Oscar nomination for special effects.
02. Jurassic Park
Richard Attenborough plays the role of John Hammond, the owner of a park located on a remote island inhabited by dinosaurs cloned from samples of blood taken from insect fossils found in pine. The idea is ingenious, but things get out of control. Before opening the park, Hammond invites the researchers Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and Dern Lara to explore the park with his two grandchildren. Combining elements of robotics with computer generated images, the movie won the Oscar for best video effects.
