Some of the greatest nerds of movies are not teachers or students. The genres in which nerds were main characters range from horror to comedy.
10. Psycho
Has 40 years, he lives with his mother and has a stable sentimental relationship. Bates is the perfect nerd. Although apparently has a sinister life style that will change with the arrival at the motel of a mysterious and beautiful women, absolute evil under the appearance of labile Bates (played perfectly by Perkins) will invalidate any attempt to “normality”.
09. 17 Again
“Are you now, or have you ever been, a Norse god, vampire or time-travelling cyborg?” is probably the reply remaining in people’s minds after seeing 17 Again. And belongs to Zac Efron, but his friend, Ned, that’s kind of encyclopedia of clichés about nerds. What makes him more special than others is that he has a “romantic startle” on the final, deceiving little the myth of nerd.
08. High Fidelity
Vinyl shop owned by John Cussack in High Fidelity is room for maneuver of Dick, a connoisseur of obscure music. A bald guy, weak, which can have any age between 25 and 45 years… there is no band or musician who has not been heard and re-listen by Dick, which, finally finds a friend that impresses with the reply “Marie de Salle’s playing. You remember I told you about her. I like her. She’s kind of Sheryl Crow-ish crossed with a post-Partridge Family pre-L.A. Law Susan Dey kind of thing, but, you know, uh, black”. Absolutely charming.
07. Superman
Perhaps the most important standard like “nerd with a secret” is Superman. The best Superman remains Christopher Reeve, that for making the image of the nerd one of manual. He’s really nerd, not just a front-evidence are many scenes in which he lost balance and temper in front of Lois. The fact that you can be nerd and fly around the moon, made Clark a god of nerds from everywhere.
06. Ghost World
Seymour is, unlike those of so far, a tragic nerd. Has 40 years old, lives alone, dressed in a checkered coat. Collects hates music on vinyl and actually hates his life “You think it’s healthy to obsessively collect things?”. That is until he meets Enid, a woman like him, but which is, however, much more lively.
05. Bolt
In this top is a fictional nerd. Hamster who accompanies Bolt on his journey is a fledged nerd. It’s maintained by others, all day watching TV, dreaming to be a hero, is hysterical and scared… probably many “couch potatoes” were identified with hamster (even if not recognized and it).
04. One Hour Photo
Like the other Seymour from the top, the role played by Williams is a tragic one. One Hour Photo is a drama about a man terribly distressing one. Seymour puts on the walls pictures of other people, and for the spectator’s hard to say if he’s a maniac, a pedophile serial killer or just a human emotional suffering.
03. Scream
Meeks is a nerd who watches horror movies. Knowledges those are good for him when the killer (a kind of sum of all the clichés of horrors) starts killing teenagers. He knows that having sex should not die and disappear from the group of survivors even an instant. In addition, has one of the great lines of nerds history “I never thought I’d be so happy to be a virgin”.
02. Ghostbusters
Louis is a true nerd. Physical: is short, with glasses, uncertain age, is allergic, skinny and ineffective. Mental: intelligent, passionate about science, shy with women, childish. Nobody believes him when he says that ghosts will invade New York. When things get out of control, he will “overcome fears to save the day”. Classic.
01. American Splendor
Maybe you should make an effort to remember Toby. Toby is a proud nerd of his condition. In addition, it is inspired by a real person, like Harkey Pekar, the character of the movie. Toby is a close friend of Harvey (not someone else seems to know the outside of it). Talks hard, wear ridiculous clothes and do not known how to behave in society. It’s saddening and funny and very difficult to classify, but certainly memorable.
